Geek Of The Day: DarkPhoenix |
|
Nickname: "DarkPhoenix"
Real Name: Pete Age: 00100100 Resides: Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Occupation: Draughtsman/programmer/general dogsbody...
Favourite websites: darkphoenix.deviantart.com and my own, I guess: www.petesplace.id.au
Favourite application, game, and program of all time: Fave game: HL2; fave program: perl
What are you working on right now: Working on ... not enough sleep, and too much coffee... I'm actually putting the finishing touches to my sixth HLDM level. Other than that, just tweaking a couple of PHP pages for the intranet at work.
What is your current Wallpaper/Screensaver: On which machine? The one at work has a great (IMHO) screenshot of my latest HLDM level. This machine has a generic Mandrake wallpaper. My primary usage machine has a blank black background.
What's so special about your computer room: Three computers set up, with room for two more.
How many computers do you have: Three PCs that work (1 x Linux 'net gateway; 2 x Windows/Linux dual boot for gaming), and perhaps another dozen or so carcasses.
What was your first computer: A Dick Smith's VZ-200, 8kb of combined RAM/ROM, built-in BASIC programming language, Z80 CPU.
Do you remember the first program you ran on it: The first program I ran on it was probably a game. Oh, and I wrote (and was regularly beaten by) a version of Othello (aka Reversi.)
Geekiest moment of your life: Perhaps it was the time I got a particular web-page form working the way I wanted: PHP generating Javascript on the fly by pulling data from a MySQL database (and perhaps not so much the fact I got it working, but the fact I proceeded to do a victory dance!) Perhaps it was the joy I felt at getting the coke machine explosion in one of my death-match levels to work.
When did you first realize you were a geek: Well, I always thought I was a nerd. The geek realisation was a little slow dawning...
If I was a program I'd be: perl--because we both seem to have a quirky sense of humour...
Favourite quote: "Beware the rage of a patient man!"
What do you do when you're not at your computer(s): Sorry, I don't understand the question?!
You have a time machine that can only be used once. If you use it you won't come back. What date would you set it to, and what ONE thing would you take with you (not a computer): I'd go back ten years, because there are a couple of things I've done which I'd probably do differently, if I knew then what I know now. What would I take? The winning numbers for a large-jackpot lotto spring to mind, although knowing me, even if I knew, I'd probably forget to put them on...

The Truth Behind The Geek (*creative liberties taken for the benefit of the reading audience)
Pete remembers the time Probably the time he tried to get his linux ppp dialling (and more specifically, the login) working (back when he was still on a dialup account) on a new installation, and when he gave up and went upstairs, he didn't realise that ppp was still live and trying to make a connection. Of course, each outgoing call was answered by his ISP, which then promptly hung up again because the authorisation wasn't working. (He doesn't actually remember what he was doing wrong any more, except that it turned out to be an easy fix.) Anyway, by the time he came downstairs the next morning, it had managed to rack up a $200 phone bill...
