Geek Of The Day: Goldenpi |
|
Nickname: Goldenpi
Real Name: James Age: 17 in the best number system I know of, duodecimal. 19 for those who dont know it.
Resides: Kent, England
Occupation: Lazy networking student
Favourite websites: Slashdot
Favourite programs of all time: mIRC - the reason for having two monitors.
What are you playing and working on right now: Checking the anime downloads, watching four IRC channels, and fighting the university website.
What is your current Wallpaper/Screensaver: I have a background, I rarely get to see it under the array of windows...but if you will excuse my copyright infringement, it is here.
How many pieces of vendorwear do you own: Good question... I dont keep track of what I pull from the skips.
What's so special about your computer room: While the rest of the house must be family-friendly, the computer room is a snake-pit of wires hanging from the walls and ceiling.
How many computers do you have: Two PCs on this desk (one windows, one linux), and a linux-based router in a cupboard. A laptop and another PC for the family. Two unused more in the loft, and parts to build a couple of extras.
What was your first computer: Something with a tape drive and rubber keys.
Do you remember the first program you ran on it: 10 a=0 20 a=a+1 30 if a<500 goto 20 40 beep 1,100 50 beep 1,200 60 goto 10
Geekiest moment of your life: Lying on insulating fiber with a few centimeters of clearance, wearing safety glasses as I soldered a splice into a coax cable just in front of my eyes.
When did you first realize you were a geek: I have always known.
If I was a program I'd be: A file manager, with my love of data.
Favourite quote: anything you can get with a 'fortune' command.
What do you do when you're not at your computer(s): I only leave for university.
You have a time machine that can only be used once. If you use it you won't come back. What date would you set it to, and what ONE thing would you take with you (not a computer): One week ago, and the lottery numbers. I would have to set it as close to the draw as possible to avoid influenceing the numbers. How to deal with the other me is more complicated.

The Truth Behind The Geek (*creative liberties taken for the benefit of the reading audience)
James, who worships duct tape, as his computers are mostly made from it, regrets throwing away his two Atari STs, two Amstrads (CPC464 and 6128), an Acorn, a C64, a NES and a SNES. James, admittedly a bit of a pack rat, reached that critical mass point of parts that all collectors eventually and ultimately reach.
