Geek Of The Day: Homie G E-mail

geek geeky nerd

Homie G

Real Name:  Gareth
Age:  one one oh one oh

Resides:  Canberra, Australia
Occupation:  Software Engineer

geek geeky nerd

Favourite websites:
www.slashdot.org , www.whirlpool.net.au , www.fark.com and of course my own (obligatory plug)
www.garethforward.com

Favourite application, game, or program of all time:
Sierra's "Hero's Quest : So you want to be a Hero". The original EGA version before it was renamed and remade.

What are you playing and working on  right now:
I work on military-type software applications... in my part time, I make websites and repair computers.

What is your current screensaver, background, or wallpaper:
Generally something from www.deviantart.com  I like to rotate my wallpapers a lot, and I don't use a screensaver.

What's so special about your computer room:
A nice desk and a HUGE leather chair. Oh, and a waist high server case that pretty much dominates the room.

How many computers do you have:
4. An Athlon64 gaming rig, a Sempron workstation for Web stuff and an old Celeron turned into a router. And of course,  my work's trusty laptop which I carry around everywhere. Naturally, I have a few 486's hiding in the
wardrobe.

What was your first computer:
Amstrad XT... running DOS and "Gem" as the graphical O/S.

Do you remember the first program you ran on it:
Sierra's Space Quest 1.

Geekiest moment of your life:
Downloading .GIF images of women in bikinis via a 300bps modem from a local BBS. It took around 20 minutes for each picture, but wow it was worth it... or so I thought at the time. I was young.

When did you first realize you were a geek:
Probably when my dad bought me "Lesuire Suit Larry 2 : Looking for Love (in several wrong places)" as a
birthday present. I think I was 12 at the time. When your own father buys you a game like that....well, it makes you wonder.

Have you ever said anything geeky that someone else did not understand:
I say "lol" a lot... and get odd looks for it.

What is the funniest/most bizarre computer/Internet/geeky experience you have ever had:
Electrocuting myself after opening a PSU with it still plugged in. Haven't made that mistake since!

If I was a program I'd be:
Leisure Suit Larry...because Larry Laffer was my role model when I was a kid. The less said about that, the better.

What is your favourite quote:
"It's a trap!" (I'm a star wars fan)

What do you do when you are (heaven forbid) not at your computer(s):
Watch DVD's and spend time with my girlfriend (yes, I have one... strange, I know).

You have a time machine that can only be used once. If you use it you will not come back. What date would you set it to, and what ONE thing would you take with you (not a computer):
I would go back in time armed with large garden gnome to insert into whoever sent flowers to my girlfriend when we first met. I don't like competition. Either way, I won her heart over in the end... so that's all that mattered.

Gareth, who has  an Honours Degree in Engineering (Computer Systems), and has been working with computers ever since, can  type faster than most people can speak and can pretty much assemble
a computer with his eyes closed. Gareth once wrote into a local newspaper to review one of his own websites, and  surprisingly, it was published and he had his five minutes of fame.
