Geek Of The Day: Johnny Mnemonic E-mail

Nickname:

Johnny Mnemonic

Real Name: Michael
Age: 100011
Resides: Montgomery County, Maryland
Occupation: "Macintosh Specialist"  LAN support for the NISC/NHGRI/NIH, with a Mac bent.

Favourite Website: Only one?  What kind of geek site is this? That's like asking a librarian what their favorite book is, or an astronomer what their favorite star is...I spend more time than I should at Slashdot.

Favourite Application Of All Time: Terminal.app

What Are You Playing And Working On  Right Now:
I'm working on configuring and optimizing a 9 node Xserve cluster for bioinformatics work, specifically BLAST, which is the tool used to find genomic differences between organisms.

Current Wallpaper/Screensaver: My cluster *sigh*.

How Many Computers Do You Have: I have 2 iBooks, a PowerBook, a dual CPU 2.0Ghz G5 is on the way, and I keep an HP dual booting linux/windows around so I can laugh at it.  Also an old G3 with lots of weird stuff in it, but is mainly serving as a router/gateway.

I also have an old Sun to learn how Unix should be done vs the NeXT-ish way of Apple.

Also a Tivo, if that counts. All of is connected via 802.11b, except the HP box, as Windows isn't let on my network.

What's So Special About Your Computer Room: It has Mac stuff in it.  I'll bet yours doesn't. :)

When Did You First Realize You Were A Geek:  When I was more interested in breaking things and fixing them on my computer, than actually getting any work done at it. Now, breaking and fixing things I can call work.

Geekiest Moment: Responding to this questionnaire.

If I Was A Program I'd Be: NetInfo Manager.  Only funny if you have a Mac.

Favourite Quote: Jobs: "Our stuff is better!"  Gates:  "It doesn't matter." (Pirates of Silicon Valley)

The Truth Behind The Geek
(*creative liberties taken for the benefit of the reading audience)

Michael, whose original image was cropped from (http://www.bungie.org/mwny2000/fanfest/fansinny.html), has accreted knowledge of the way the Apple OS works, driven by a fanaticism to make it behave when it doesn't want to. Michael would also like to add that: "Mac5 0wn, Wind0z3 is teh suX."

Data Recovery For Dimwits, Dolts, And Deleters

If you work with computers in your business or line of work, you know that there's nothing more frustrating than accidentally deleting a file, or worse yet, losing your data entirely because of a hard drive crash, a power spike, or you do something careless like leaving your laptop in a coffee shop. But if you're like me, you take precautions, and you backup, backup, backup. But even if we are systematic in our data storing habits, sometimes we forget to back up our work when we need to the...

Foraying Into The World Of Forex

As a computer geek (I prefer to call myself a man with an appreciation for redundant technologies) my desk has always been filled with monitors (four at present), and there's always room for more (well, there isn't, but I could always get a bigger desk). I use my monitors for a variety of tasks and pleasures, but I can never quite utilize the space the way professionals do, like stock traders. These forex wizards have charts, graphs, and updates running on multiple monitors, with stats,...
