N0ne

Real Name:  Paul
Age:  30
Resides:  Hell, or one of its suburbs
Occupation:  Linux Sysadmin/BOFH/"That guy that sits in the office and does stuff we don't understand"

Favorite website(s):
http://localhost/apache_default.htm

Favorite book, movie, or TV show:
Firefly, Pratchett's Discworld

Favorite game, application, or program of all time:
cowsay

What are you playing and working on right now:
I'm answering an email quiz.  I'm also setting up our web filter to allow me to visit all the archives of www.freelancesluggy.com

What is your current screensaver, background, or wallpaper:
My daughter and some daisies.

What's so special about your computer (room):
At home?  I mount fourteen different encrypted partitions... They all have a different password.  Originally, it was an experiment in which I was learning to set up encrypted disks, and after a while I forgot they were there.  I only reboot once every two months or so, so once every two months I get annoyed at it... and then forget until I have to reboot again.

How many computers do you have:
6.  Two are 'dead spares'.  One firewall, my wife's machine, mine and a PVR/media server I built from junk parts.

What was your first computer:
Atari 500ST (or was it a 1040?)

Do you remember the first program you ran on it (or the first game you played):
HUrm....  On a PC?  MY Dad has this Bally Basic thing.  I typed in a game of 'hobbit' via a  "How to program in Basic" book he had.  Fun stuff.

Geekiest moment of your life:
Realizing I knew what both THAC0 and GIGO meant during the same loser marathon of Jeopardy.

When did you first realize you were a geek:
Grade school.  Although at the time, the word being screamed was "nerd".

Have you ever said anything geeky that someone else did not understand:
Oy.  Don't go there.  If my mouth is open, and there is another geek within range, there is a good chance someone is standing there getting an unsolicted geeking.

What is the funniest/most bizarre computer/Internet/geeky experience you have ever had:
Discovering my father had a (model) starship named after him.

What is your favourite quote:
"Wherever you go, there you are."

If you were a computer program, you would be: why:
Probably something Windows related, since I don't mind working, as long as I don't have to interact with humans.

What do you do when you are (heaven forbid) not at your computer(s):
Reading.  Watching movies.  Possibly sleeping.

You have a time machine that can only be used once. If you use it you will not come back. What date would you set it to, and what ONE thing would you take with you (not a computer):
Assuming I cannot tell what I'm going to run into before I get there, I'd have to choose the date of Microsoft's IPO, and I would choose to take with me the largest chunk of gold I could find (to cash in and invest).

Knowing what the future held, while extremely attractive, would be terribly dangerous without some recon first.

Paul, who says he'spretty average, geek-wise, is immersed in geek-culture, but he hasn't been overcome by it.  (Yet). Paul's dad calls him the Geek Family Robinson.  He and his dad are both Sysadmins, and his brother is some kind of lab monkey for Google. He expects his children will be made out of cpu thermal grease, or something.

Paul would like to add: "You can keep all your base, if I can keep my zig."
