Nickname: Orty
Real Name: Jake Age: Too young to have two kids Resides: Bend, Oregon
Occupation: Under-appreciated Grunt Geek
Favourite Website: Actually, I like BBspot, User Friendly, Fark, and pretty much everything you see linked on my blog at Utterly Boring. I have about 150 feeds in my RSS reader (FeedDemon). I don't really have a "Favorite" web site.
Favourite Application Of All Time: Irfanview (www.irfanview.com). I do a crapload of graphics/DTP work, and to have a small little program that can open damn near anything I can throw at it is tremendously helpful (and beats the hell out of opening a huge application for it).
What Are You Playing And Working On Right Now: Bendblogs.com: Up, running, needs some serious tweaking and CSS work; Utterlyboring.com: My blog, always working on it; sunrayinc.com: My day job, always trying to speed things up, run it stable, add features, and keep their junky servers running (I also help develop the software that powers the site at http://freerealty.rwcinc.net/); In the process of building/pricing a pile of computers (15+) for the office (and get to make a nearly 5 digit order with NewEgg, which is always fun). Cripes, I've got 300 projects on my to-do list!
Current Wallpaper/Screensaver: That they don't exist :-). I'm boring -- plain gray background, no screensaver. They just sap precious CPU power. That, and they make it hard to judge color on a desktop publishing job.
How Many Computers Do You Have: an old Compaq laptop, running a meager apache server and a few other duties; a Sager Notebook with a P4 1.8 and 512megs of RAM; An Athlon 1ghz with 4HDs and a gig of ram; a PIII 450 Gateway, sitting there collecting dust (need to part it out), and I'm sure enough parts sitting in my unreachable closet for a dozen computers.
What's So Special About Your Computer Room: That it's impossible for me to access ;-). My office has become the storage center in the house, so if my router were to melt into a pile of goo, I'd never know it. I primarily work on my laptop.
When Did You First Realize You Were A Geek: When I realized that all the years I was spending getting a journalism degree were being spent playing with computers and writing technology articles.
Geekiest Moment: When I was in high school and I was in charge of getting the Macintoshes on to the Internet. Took them 4 years after I graduated before they figured out how to add another one ;-)
If I Was A Program I'd Be: A program that could do damn near anything on your computer, but couldn't do any of it as well as a stand alone program.
Favourite Quote: "Software development today is a race between programmers trying to create bigger, better, and more idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to create bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning."

The Truth Behind The Geek (*creative liberties taken for the benefit of the reading audience)
Jake, who is a huge fan of Homesite for Web development, boasts the largest clip-art library in Oregon. Jake's favourite graphic format is .wmf, only because he despises Corel's proprietary .cdr, and J-Peg sounds too much like a rapper's nickname. Jake was once arrested for telling a stranger in a fast food line-up that he was a fontographer.
