If you're anything like me...you're one good-looking dude. But you see, as a man who spends all day in front of a computer (several computers actually), it's difficult to stay in good, healthy shape.

While computer geeks (programmers, admins, sysops, testers, data entry dudes, and gamers) work just as hard as everyone else (harder perhaps), it's a real challenge to keep the pounds off when every day is spent with butt firmly planted to computer chair. We have to admit that typing at 95 words per minute just doesn't burn fat the way that other activities do.

It's not like computer work isn't fatiguing--it really is, mentally. But your body doesn't give you any cardiovascular credit for working late into the night on a complex java script. Instead, it chooses to preserve you, like a bear preparing for a winter hibernation. It seems every Big Mac, Whopper, and Ding Dong gets converted into long-term fat storage.

Is there any wonder why geeks have a greater likelihood of getting fat?

Now I'm not saying that this is the case for everyone who spends more time on their computer than away from it. But this is where the stereotypes come from--the cola-slurping, cheeze-doodle munching, Dorito-crazed nerds who are too focused on their monitors to make anything more than ramen noodles, Kraft Dinner, and cocktail weenies (when they're not ordering fast food). If parents had never delivered a decent home-cooked meal to the basement, they'd never see a vegetable in their lifetimes.

We've all tried to work off the pounds, either with diet or exercise. Dieting seems more like a punishment, and exercise, like cooking healthy food, is too time-consuming. Any amount of physical exertion takes away from the precious moments we need to resource, research, or re-spawn. We just can't justify walking up to the 7-Eleven to buy Mountain Dew, when we can drive the single block up to the store. Time is an enemy, and our weight is just a casualty of war.

But what if there was a way to exercise without sacrificing valuable screen time? Now I'm not talking about playing Dance Dance Revolution or flailing my arms around with a Wii controller. Instead, what if we were encouraged, or forced to generate our own power to run our electronic resources? Do you think we could successfully integrate pedal energy with our computer systems to create a harmony of healthiness and geekiness?

What if all of our television sets, dvd players, and laptops ran on human power? Aside from the tangible savings on the electric bill, the geeks and the couch potatoes could soon become the fittest demographic in the human population. You don't know the mental will of an overweight online gamer who is so absorbed in his game he'll do almost anything to get to that next level. Strap him to a bike, and who knows how many hours of World of Warcrack he could play if he had to motor himself from one quest to the next.

It may seem like a radical idea, and pedal-powered computers may never come to pass. But even if you operated your bike-powered computer for one or two hours a day, you could possibly counteract some of the affects of a box of Krispy Kreme donuts washed down with a two-litre bottle of caffeinated soda. Maybe one day you'd be able take an "X" or two off the size of that overstretched Blizzard t-shirt.
